Safe Harbor Workshop

"Any port in a storm" is a saying that has nautical connotations, meaning that in an emergency situation, any solution will do, even one that is usually unacceptable.  Yes, a diagnosis of dementia is an emergency, but there are acceptable solutions; there are safe harbors in which to seek refuge.

Connelly Law Offices, Ltd. is committed to providing our clients with a safe harbor, making the process of planning for the future of those diagnosed with dementia, as well as their families, as pain-free as possible.

Our law firm believes that dedicated customer service and individual attention can make this frightening and difficult process empowering.

Our staff utilizes a multi-disciplinary approach with expert legal advice, professional fiduciary services and care coordination which allows us to be unwavering advocates for our clients, regardless of their living situation, diagnosis or means.

Collaborating with families at this most difficult time to ensure their loved one is receiving the best possible care in the least restrictive environment possible is what we strive for.  By doing this, we build professional and lasting relationships with our senior care community partners, allowing us to better serve our clients.

We believe that a diagnosis of dementia becomes the shared journey of seniors, families, financial and elder law professionals and practitioners, all working as a team, with trust and confidence in each other, planning for the best outcome possible.

You or a loved one has just been diagnosed with dementia.  You feel numb, scared, confused, or even denying that such a thing could happen to you or someone you love.  Everything around you has stopped, your emotions are overwhelmed, and it can't be real.

What's next?  To whom do you turn?  How should you feel?  And what do you say to others?  In reality, there is no right or wrong way to feel.  It will take time to accept the diagnosis.  This will probably include talks with loved ones, friends, and healthcare professionals.

Eventually, you will begin to accept the diagnosis.  Then you educate yourself on dementia and learn how to move forward.

You understand that dementia is not a normal part of aging and it affects everyone differently.  You may have problems with memory, thinking, concentration and language. You may become confused or struggle to make sense of what you can see or hear. You may also experience changes in mood, emotions and behavior.

You also learn that dementia is a progressive condition, meaning that your symptoms will get worse over time. But you also find out that there are many people who continue to live well for quite some time.

You will have your medical and other healthcare professionals who can provide you with the course of the disease and the best way to treat it.  But some crucial legal considerations must become a part of planning for someone diagnosed with dementia.

In this workshop, we will discuss multiple issues.  We will provide you with some information you will need including:

  1. Preparing for Long-Term Care Needs

  2. Preparing for Healthcare Needs

  3. Seeking benefits

  4. Making arrangements for finances and property

  5. Naming someone to carry out your wishes when you no longer can

  6. Living safely and independently as long as possible
