Attorney RJ Connelly III

In the June 2022 edition, Rhode Island Magazine has honored certified Elder Law Attorney RJ Connelly III, receiving that publication's Professional Excellence in Law award in Elder Law. This is Rhode Island Monthly's fourth annual event honoring local attorneys in their chosen fields through an exhaustive survey and strict set of professional guidelines.

Rhode Island Monthly Communications Inc., the publisher of Rhode Island Monthly magazine, asked Rhode Island licensed lawyers to vote for their peers in a range of law practice areas. The company contracted with DataJoe Research, located in Lakewood, Colorado, to conduct the survey using an online ballot for collecting, vetting, and tallying votes. Any lawyer who has received any discipline for any infraction by the state regulatory board was excluded from the results.

According to Rhode Island Monthly, "'Professional Excellence in Law' is an awards program that recognizes those individuals named among the leading professionals in their field. Less than 6% of area lawyers are on this select list. These professionals are chosen based on several criteria ranging from peer reviews, professional standing and other data collected by a third-party survey and data company."

Attorney Connelly's Biography

The following is Attorney Connelly's biography as it appears in the June 2022 edition of Rhode Island Monthly magazine.

Attorney Connelly practices in the area of elder law. This area of law involves Medicaid planning and asset protection advice for those individuals entering nursing homes, planning for the possibility of disability through the use of powers of attorney for both health care and finances, guardianship, estate planning, probate and estate administration, preparation of wills, living trusts and special or supplemental needs trusts.

Attorney Connelly practices heavily in both contested and uncontested probate court matters and provides a wide range of fiduciary services to his clients in acting as trustee, attorney-in-fact, and representative payee or other court appointments.

He represents clients primarily in the states of Rhode Island, Connecticut, and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. He was certified as an Elder Law Attorney (CELA) by the National Elder Law Foundation (NELF) in 2008. Lawyers who are certified as specialists have been recognized by independent professional certifying organizations as having an enhanced level of skill, as well as substantial involvement in established legal specialty areas. Certifying organizations require lawyers to demonstrate special training, experience, and knowledge to ensure that recognition as a certified specialist is meaningful and reliable.

Attorney Connelly has been honored by numerous organizations for his work with seniors and those providing services to seniors. His office offers free training in elder law issues and non-legal issues such as senior bullying, senior substance abuse and caregiver support. Over the years, he has received the Alliance for Better Long-Term Care’s Hero Award, Lawyer Monthly’s Elder Law Attorney of the Year, among others.

On Being Honored

"When I was informed of being chosen for the Professional Excellence in Law award by Rhode Island Monthly, I was humbled, especially knowing that my peers participated in the selection," said Attorney Connelly. "But more importantly, knowing that our reviews and referrals by our clients also played a part in this meant even more to me. I must also say that this honor would not be possible if not for the wonderfully talented team that I have supporting me at Connelly Law and knowing that every day, they give their all for our clients and have a true dedication to the work that we do. I am blessed to have them."
