Each in-service/workshop includes a powerpoint presentation, audience discussion, and handouts and runs from 30 to 90 minutes depending on the subject matter.

FREE QUARTERLY WORKSHOPS   presented by RJ Connelly, III Esquire

You’re invited to attend Free Workshops hosted by the staff of Connelly Law Offices, Ltd.  These workshops are offered usually in the spring, summer, fall, and winter and are held at our offices in Pawtucket, Rhode Island or Mystic, Connecticut.  We discuss estate planning, probate issues, Medicaid Planning, fiduciary services and all things elder law.  Subscribe to our site and you will receive advance notice of these free events!

ESTATE PLANNING   presented by RJ Connelly, III Esquire or Connelly Law Staff

The workshop provides education about the basic tools of estate planning, such as wills, trusts and powers of attorney.  They inform participants about the planning challenges related to probate, guardianship, titling of assets and estate taxes.  Attendees also learn how to avoid common mistakes made in estate planning.   A question and answer period will follow the presentation.

RETIREMENT 101   presented by RJ Connelly, III Esquire or Connelly Law Staff

The gold watch good-bye accompanied by a great pension is gone.  Rising healthcare costs, low interest rates for fixed income investments and traditional savings plans showing little or no return for the investment have caused many to dial back their retirement expectations. Attendees will learn how to plan for retirement using estate planning tools, maximizing their employer retirement benefits and developing a long term care plan.

MEDICAID PLANNING  presented by RJ Connelly, III Esquire or Connelly Law Staff

Medicaid planning is taking the necessary steps now to ensure that if the need for long-term care (nursing home or assisted living) should arise for you, you will be eligible for Medicaid to pay for it. Medicaid planning requires you follow specific rules that if not followed properly, can disqualify you from benefits for a period longer than you would have to be.  A question and answer period will follow the presentation.

WEALTH MANAGEMENT presented by RJ Connelly, III Esquire or Connelly Law Staff

Wealth management involves professional fiduciary services. This workshop discusses the role of a fiduciary which includes help with paying bills and closing or transferring accounts, preparing court Inventories and accountings, trust reports, coordinate the preparation of tax returns and draft guardian reports. Fiduciaries can also serve as trustee, executor, guardian, conservator or power of attorney for you and your loved ones.

ELDER EXPLOITATION   presented by RJ Connelly, III Esquire or Connelly Law Staff

Elder abuse and mistreatment is a growing public health problem, and it has a devastating impact on the mental and physical health and well-being of some of the most vulnerable members of our communities.  The purpose of this workshop is to focus on the exploitation of elders financially, physically and mentally as well as the ways to recognize and seek help for this ever growing problem.

THE SILENT EPIDEMIC   presented by Don Drake, LADC I

According to the Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services, substance abuse among senior citizens can be classified into two general forms: the “hardy survivor,” or those who have been abusing substances for many years and have reached 65, and the “late onset” group, which is those who form addictions later in life.  We will discuss the symptoms of addiction and seeking help for those in its throes.

BABY BOOMERS AND HEP C   presented by Don Drake, LADC I

Few Baby Boomers have been tested for the liver-damaging hepatitis C virus, despite recommendations that all members of that generation have the blood test at least once, new research suggests.  We will discuss what hepatitis is, the effects on the liver and available treatment.  Also discussed will be the rising rate of STDs in seniors.  The presenter was a certified Hepatitis C Educator by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.

As the nation grapples with a devastating opioid epidemic, concerns have primarily focused on young people, but America’s elderly also have a problem. Over the past several decades, physicians have increasingly prescribed seniors pain medications to address chronic pain from arthritis, cancer, neurological diseases and other illnesses that become more common in later life.  We will discuss the physical and financial effects of addiction.

SENIORS BULLYING SENIORS               presented by Don Drake, LADC I

The United States is an aging society and as such, the problems that plague other segments of our population also appear in the senior demographic, and this includes the issue of “bullying”.  Those who work with seniors in nursing facilities, senior centers, retired living communities, medical and psychiatric group facilities and other locations where seniors may socialize report that “bullying” is a problem that is increasingly coming to their attention.  In this presentation, we will talk about "bullying", how to recognize it, how to confront it and teaching seniors techniques to stand up for themselves.
